The Effectiveness of Brushing After Oral Hygiene Instruction Given in a Grop of Mental Retardation Children Kalasin Province.

Abstract

          The quasi-experimental study aimed to compare the effectiveness of brushing before and after playing a group of oral hygiene instruction using a story telling video program for 3 weeks. The samples were 32 children with mild mental retardation and aged 8-12 years old, in Kalasin Panyanukun School, Yang Talat District, Kalasin Province. Plaque index (PI) scores were examined using Quigley-Hein ( 1962) oral examination and recorded by a student of Bachelor of Public Health Program in Dental Public Health,who was calibrated ( Kappa statistics; K - 0.90) . Data Analysis included descriptive statistics and Paried t-test performed to evaluate the effectiveness of brushing. Explored mean difference, 95%CI. Significance level at the p-value <0.05.

          The study revealed that before given oral hygiene instruction, 59.4% and 40.6% of the subjects had good and fair brushing effectiveness level respectively. After the intervention, 78.1% and 21.9% of the subjec ts had good and very good brushing effectivenes s level respectively.

          The study showed that the mean score of plaque index after dental health education (1.4 (SD =0.16)) was lower than the mean score of plaque index before dental health education (2.5 (SD =0.19)) statistically. Mean difference of plaque index score was 1.10 (95 % CI=1.02-1.17, p-value <0.001). The results of this study indicated that teaching a group of oral hygiene instruction by using a video story telling help mild mental retardation children to remove plaque effectively.
