The effect of oral health promotion program applying sense of coherence on oral health related quality of life of the elderly with diabetes

This quasi experimental study aimed to test the effect of an oral health promotion intervention applying sense of coherence (SOC) on oral health related quality of life of elderly with diabetes. The samples were 56 elderly people who registered at Donplai health care in Chok Chai District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province: half in the experimental and the comparison groups. The experimental group received a 4-day-intensive program promoting SOC. Data were collected by the questionnaires including demographic data , sense of coherence and oral health related quality of life (Thai-OHIP) before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Independent sample test. After the intervention the experimental group had better SOC and oral health related quality of life than those in the comparison group (p-value <0.001) (95% confidence interval of the differences were 16.58 to 29.35 and 9.44 to 20.85 respectively). The study indicated that oral health promotion program applying SOC improved oral health related quality of life of elderly patients with diabetes. Therefore, providing the activities to increase SOC comprising comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness should be considered to improve oral health related quality of life and promote oral health in the elderly with diabetes.
