Factors associated with alcoholic consumption behaviors among secondary school students in Khon Kaen Province

Abstract

            This cross-sectional analytical research was to identify alcoholic beverage consumption behaviors and factors associated with alcoholic beverage consumption behaviors among 720 secondary school students in Khon Kaen Province. Data were collected by a questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics to examine the prevalence, behavioral patterns and inferential statistics, multiple logistic regressions to identify factors related to alcoholic beverage consumption behaviors.

          Results revealed that 43.89% of the students have been drinking alcohol. The earliest age of starting alcohol consumption was 10 years. Only six of significantly associated factors remained in the final adjusted-model using stepwise method. The factors were consisted of no closed-friends (OR_{ad j}=14.94; 95% CI=2.27-98.28), poor family relation (OR_adj=8.18; 95% CI=2.99-22.33), poor attitude on alcohol consumption behaviors (OR_adj=7.96; 95% CI=3.93-13.39), tobacco used (OR_adj=5.83; 95% CI=3.72-9.14), poor knowledge toward alcohol use (OR_adj=5.34; 95% CI=1.65-17.32) , and no after class activities with friends (OR_adj=2.68; 95% CI=1.67-4.31) , respectively.
