Attitudes and sense of coherence of dental public health students towards the dental fieldwork

The study was carried out to evaluate attitudes and sense of coherence of dental public health students before and after the dental fieldwork. The associations of attitudes, sense of coherence and learning achievement were also explored. The samples were 277 students aged of 20.93 (sd=12.6; Max:Min =33:18), who studied at the second year of the diploma program, Sirindhorn college of public health, KhonKaen, Thailand. The majority of sample was female (79.8%). Data were collected using the self-reported questionnaires. Attitudes towards dental fieldwork were obtained by the questionnaire comprising 25 items whereas the sense of coherence was measured using the SOC-13 scale. The result showed that there was no significant difference of the attitude of the students before and after dental fieldwork (t=0.85; 95% CI= (-1.13)-2.80; p-value =0.398). After the fieldwork, the students had significantly lower sense of coherence (t=2.62; 95% CI= 0.43-3.07; p-value <0.05). In relation to learning achievement there were no significant relationships between attitudes and sense of coherence and the scores of dental fieldwork. The influences of attitudes and sense of coherence on learning achievement and vice versa may be mediated by other variables.
