The Development of Instructional Model Using Service Learning Method for Volunteer Spirit Behavior Among the Students in Community Public Health Program, Sirindhron College of Public Health, Khon Kaen

The objective of this research were 1) to develop the instructional model using service learning method for voluntary behaviors among bachelor students who were studying in community public health program, Sirindhron College of Public Health, Khon Kaen and 2) to evaluate the instructional model. The model was developed by synthesizing the instructional model and the social service learning principles. Forty-five students who consented to the model were organized by a constructive questionnaire for the quantitative data and an in-depth interview for the qualitative data. Descriptive statistics were illustrated for demographic data. Paired t-test was employed to compare voluntary behavior scores before and after the treatment. Qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis.
The instructional model using service learning method for enhancing the consciousness in social participation included 7 components: 1) the rationale and objectives 2) the subject contents 3) the instructional method 4) the learner’s role 5) the teacher’s role 6) the instructional media, and 7) the evaluation. The instructional model was objectively designed to develop the knowledge and enhance the students’ voluntary behaviors in a form of integration between the teachers and students activities
The findings demonstrated that the score of students’ behaviors before and after learning was 3.34 (SD= 0.04) and 4.36 (SD= 0.03) respectively. After the treatment, the awareness of voluntary behaviors scores increased significantly at 0.05 level with a mean difference accounted for 1.02 scores (95% CI: 0.92 to 1.11; p-value<0.001). The qualitative data were concluded that the instructional model using service learning method would be able to enhance the consciousness of voluntary behaviors among the community public health program students.
