The participatory process for dental care in new pregnant groups through family dental care team in Khuangnai district, Ubon Ratchathani Province

Abstract

    This action research aimed to study the dental care participatory process in a new pregnant group by applying family care team program. The sample group for the qualitative data collection included health care professional who took responsible for antenatal care, dental care, family care in contracting units for primary care of Khuangnai district and pregnant. The sample group for the quantitative data collection included 104 family health managers of the health promoting hospitals. Data were collected from April – September 2015. The research consisted of both qualitative and quantitative data. Data were analyzed by using computer programs and content analysis. Paired sample t-test was performed for comparison before and after the process. 

     The oral health care process consisted of 1) focus group discussion 2) training for the family health managers 3) supporting media, 4) home visiting 5) mobile dental health service 6) follow-up process 7) evaluation and 8) group reflection. The results revealed that the knowledge, the performance and participation in oral health promotion of the family health managers were significantly increased (p-value<0.001). The pregnants received the dental screening and dental education at 92.76%.

     The key success factors was the advent of family dental care team that nurtured dental health of the pregnant and the organization of close proactive operation between the team and the alliance team by using home visits monitoring continuously.
