Once weekly oral doses of Generic Fluconazole 200 mg in the treatment of Tinea corporis and Tinea cruris: A preliminary report

Background : Tinea corporis and Tinea cruris are common superficial fungal infections caused by dermatophytes.A number of topical antifungal preparations are available for the treatment of superficial dermatophytosis. However, in the case of widespread and multiple sites of infection, the topical application is considered unsatisfactory. Fluconazole is active in vitro against common pathogen of Tinea corporis and Tinea cruris, and is clinically effective in the treatment of a wide variety of superficial fungal infection.
Objective : To evaluate efficacy of oral once weekly dose of generic Fluconazole 200mg over 6 weeks.
Methods : An open, noncomparative study, Tinea corporis and Tinea cruris patients were treated with generic Fluconazole 200mg once weekly for 6 weeks. Clinical and mycologic assessments were performed before treatment, at the end of treatment and at 4 weeks after treatment. All adverse events were recorded.
Result : Furetn patients were diagnosed as dermatophyte infection, 15/20 had cistve. After 6 week of treatment, both KOH and fungal culture were negative in twelve patient (80% efficacy). No patients experienced adverse events.
Conclusion : In this report Fluconazole 200mg once weekly for 6 weeks is effective and safe regimen in the treatment of Tinea corporis and Tinea cruris.
