Short-term effect of cold pressed coconut oil supplement on lipid profiles in dyslipidemia patients receiving moderate-intensity statins

Background: Cold pressed coconut oil (CO) is a dietary supplement, which is adverted about its effects on controlled serum lipid levels. However, there are no clinical studies on the short-term effect of taking CO with moderate-intensity statin (M-S) on the lipid profiles of liver and kidney function. This study would like to find out the impacts of CO when it is taken in combination with M-S.
Methods: This study was a non-blind, randomized, controlled trial conducted in the outpatient department of internal medicine at Thammasat hospital in dyslipidemia patients receiving M-S. An experiment group received CO 1,000 mg once daily for 8 weeks compared with a control group which did not take CO. Following, blood tests including lipid profiles, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine and liver function test before and after taking CO were administered. Descriptive statistic and student-t-test were used for analyzing baseline characteristic data and the differences of lipid profiles liver and kidney function, respectively.
Results: 61 patients received CO and 63 patients received no supplements. There was no statistically significant difference of total cholesterol levels, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein and triglyceride levels (T-score 0.942, 1.83, -1.014, and 1.44, P-value 0.35, 0.072, 0.31, and 0.145, respectively). Kidney and the liver function test were also not statistically significant difference.
Conclusion: There is no effect of CO on lipid profiles, liver and kidney functions in patients who received M-S with CO in short term use.
