Abstract

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is the most common form of intestinal failure (IF). The primary mechanism of SBS is malabsorption of  ingested foods, due to a reduction or bypass of the absorptive mucosal surface which result in malnutrition and dehydration. As such, management of SBS depends on gastrointestinal anatomy and physiology which requires a personalized plan of nutrition-related, medical interventions to optimize nutrients, fluid, and electrolyte balance. Nutrition management of SBS is composed of a supply of nutrients by enteral route which helps stimulating gastrointestinal adaptation, parenteral nutrition, fluid and pharmacologic treatment to control loss of water and electrolytes as well as monitoring for possible complications. Moreover, psychological support is also important.
