Effectiveness of the Home Ward Caring Program on Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 Patients at Waeng Yai Hospital, Waeng Yai District, Khon Kaen Province

Abstract

This Quasi Experimental Research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a home-based inpatient care program for patients with type 2 diabetes at Waeng Yai Hospital, Khon Kaen Province. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The sample consisted of 45 patients with type 2 diabetes who received services at the Chronic Disease Clinic, Outpatient Department, Waeng Yai Hospital, between September and October 2024. Participants met the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the home-based inpatient care program. The intervention comprised six steps: goal setting, data collection, data processing, decision-making, implementation, and evaluation, conducted over 12 weeks. Data were collected using a researcher-developed questionnaire. Statistical analysis included frequency, percentage, standard deviation, and paired sample t-test.

The results revealed that, after the intervention, the experimental group had significantly higher mean scores for knowledge and attitudes toward self-care compared to before the intervention (t =-13.692, t =-16.648, P-value < 0.001). Additionally, their self-care behaviors improved significantly (t=-9.270, P-value < 0.001). The participants expressed a high level of satisfaction with the program overall (Mean = 4.68, SD = 0.34).

The findings suggest that implementing a home-based inpatient care program that emphasizes patient self-management, supported by healthcare professionals, can enhance knowledge, attitudes, and self-care behaviors in patients with type 2 diabetes.
