Health risk assessment of BTEX exposure among gasoline station workers
Main Article Content
Abstract
The aims of this cross-sectional study were to assess the health risks on BTEX exposure and correlation between risk levels of BTEX exposure and location or position of gasoline station workers. There 128 gasoline station workers included into the study. The data were collected by questionnaire on experiencing symptoms related to BTEX toxicity, measurement of the BTEX concentrations by active air sampling which followed NIOSH number 1501 and using GC-FID for analysis. The health risk level was assessed by risk matrix considering the BTEX exposure opportunity (concentration level x exposure frequency level) and severity of experiencing symptoms. The results showed that 4.7% of workers had opportunity of benzene exposure higher than 50% occupational exposure limit (OEL). There were 7.5% of refueling workers and 7.4% of cashiers had moderate risk level on BTEX exposure. Location of gasoline station correlated with the risk level, and 28% of workers had moderate health risk level worked in urban zone. These findings suggest that entrepreneurs should provide health surveillance program with an annual health check-up and reduce working time optimum 8 hours a day among refueling workers and cashiers, particularly in workers of urban zone or high service of gasoline.
