Objective : To compare the incidence of abnormal cervical cytologic screening results between HIV-infected and non HIV-infected women.

Designs : Cross-sectional study.

Setting : Sumutsakhon Hospital.

Subjects : A total of 70 HIV-infuted and 296 non HIV-infected women who received cervical cytologic screening by conventional Pap smear at postpartum check up in the year 2004 were enrolled.

Methods : Data were abstracted from medical record, including demographic data, cenrical cytologic results and other related factors. Incidence of abnormal cytological results were compared between two groups.

Results : HlV-infected women showed significant higher incidence of overall abnormal cervical cytologic results than non HIV-infected women (31.43% and 13.18% respectively, p < 0.001). In addition, cervical squamous cell abnormalities were also significantly higher in HIV-infected women than non HIV-infected women (11.43% and 0.68% respectively, p < 0.001). No significant difference of abnormal cytologic results was observed when stratified by CD4+ cell count.

Conclusion : HIV-infected women demonstrated higher incidence of abnormal cytological smear including cenrical squamous cell abnormalities than non-infected women. Effective cervical cytologic screening and treatment program should be established in order to early detect abnormalities among HIV-infected women.
