Prevalence of Caregiver Burden and Associated Factors in Primary Caregivers of the Bed-Ridden in Tha Muang District, Kanchanaburi Province

Objective: Studying the prevalence of caregiver burden and related factors among the caregivers of the bed-ridden patients in Tha Muang District, Kanchanaburi Province
Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed by researchers travelling to collect data according to the housing of bed-ridden patients in 6 sub-districts, a total of 102 cases in Tha Muang District, Kanchanaburi. Questionnaires were made as a tool for data collection from April 22, to July 26, 2019. The data were analyzed and processed by Microsoft Excel 2017, using statistics, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, maximum, and minimum values.
Results: Of 102 attendees, 45 caregivers (44.1%) had caregiver burden, an average care score from the Zarit Burden Interview Assessment Form of 21.24 (standard deviation of 11.34). In the item of family factors, 42.9% of caregivers had insufficient family financial status. About personal factors, the caregivers of bed-ridden patients who had muscle strain from caring activity had higher mean scores with significant and statical difference (p-value <.05). Social factors, the caregivers of bed-ridden patients who had received some encouragement had higher scores of the burden assessment with significant and statical difference (p-value <.01). About patient factors, caregivers who received bad words and blame, had higher mean scores with significant and statical difference (p-value <.05). Other factors, including the age of the caregivers, number of hours of care per day, existing health problems / illnesses, smoking, use of antidepressants / sleeping pills, having family financial problems, bad relationships between caregivers and patients, lower social relationships after having to take care of patients, the level of consciousness or confusion of the patients, and sadness of the patients had no significant and statical difference in the average scores of burden assessment (p-value> .05).
Conclusion: Prevalence of caregiver burden in the caregivers of bed-ridden patients in Tha Muang District, Kanchanaburi Province is 44.1%. The related factors are muscle strain, encouragement, and using bad words or blame.
