The Effect of Distal Acupuncture for Relieving Shoulder Pain

Abstract
Shoulder pain is commonly found in general practice. The treatment options depend on causes and severity of the shoulder pain. Some treatment options includemedication, physical therapy, acupuncture,or surgery. Acupuncture is one of the effective supportive treatments of shoulder pain and has many different theories and techniques in details. The study applies principle of distal acupuncture modified fromTraditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), Tung’s acupuncture,andDr.Tan’s Balance Method to assess the efficacy of distal acupuncture for pain relief in patients with shoulder pain.
A total of 16 participants has one-sided shoulder pain without an accidental history, shoulder joint infection,or indication for surgery.In this study, all 16cases were divided into 3 group:(lateral shoulder pain, anterior shoulder pain,and posterior shoulder pain) and treated by the distalacupuncture baseline at day 0,3,7,14,21,and30 .The outcome assessment was intensityof shoulder pain whichis graded by using the visual analog scale.The study found that shoulder pain could be relieved immediately after treatment and gradually improved. In conclusion, the distal acupuncture can be relieved shoulder pain.
