Five Year Follow-up on Complete Dentures Used Under “Royal Dental Prosthesis Project” : A Case Study Among Elderly at Nakhonpathom Hospital

Objective : To follow-up on the use of complete denture among elderly under “Royal Dental Prosthesis Project” at Nakhonpathom after 5 years.
Methods : A retrospective longitudinal study was conducted among all 102 elderly whom registered in 2009. Inclusion criteria were complete denture patients under “Royal Dental Prosthesis Project” at Nakhonpathom in 2009 and exclusion criteria were seriously ill, died, migration and those who currently did not used complete dentures. Data collections were interviewing general information, quality of life using Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP index) and quality assessment of the complete denture.
Results : There were 39 of them who had used complete dentures continuously for a period of 5 years, with mean age (+ S.D.) of 74 + 7.5 years. Among them, 74 percent were female, 69 percent had systemic disease, and 33 percent were elders who are dependent on others. Although most of elderly had good quality of life assessing by OIDP (the mean OIDP score = 3.9), prevalence of oral impacts on daily performance (OIDP>0) was 28.2 percent and the most common effect was eating (25.6 percent). In addition, assessing quality of dentures by dentists, data showed that retention problem was 46.2 percent and stability problem was 43.6 percent. Majority of the elderly samples did not visit the dentist for rechecking and some of them visited dentists only when they had denture problems.
Recommendations : Proactive services should be established to foster completedenture- recheck visits. Also, policy on renewing denture with five-year duration should be reviewed according to individual cases.
