A Follow up Study among Elderly Complete Denture Wearers under Royal Dental Prosthesis Project Phutthamonthon Hospital, Nakhon Pathom Province : 3-5 Years after Treatment
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the denture status, tissue bearing area among elderly complete denture wearers after wearing complete dentures for 3-5 years under Royal Dental Prosthesis Project at Phutthamonthon Hospital, Nakhon Pathom Province.
Method: This descriptive study was collected the data among all 78 the elderly whom registered during 2011-2013. Inclusion criteria were the elderly who has been wearing complete dentures under Royal Dental Prosthesis Project at Phutthamonthon Hospital during 2011-2013 and exclusion criteria were who could not be contacted, migration, seriously ill, died and those who did not use complete dentures. Data were collected by interviewing general information, quality assessment of dentures, and clinical examination.
Results: Fourty-two of the elderly were interviewed and clinically examined after wearing complete dentures for 3-5 years, with mean age (±S.D.) of 73 ± 8.7 years. Majority of them were satisfied with the fitness, esthetics and ability to masticate. 97.62% took off their denture at night. Clinical examination showed that 83.33% of upper complete dentures were judged to have good retention whereas found only 21.43% in lower complete dentures. Inflammatory supporting tissue was found in 7.14% of the subjects. 76.19% had a need for correction, e.g. repairing, relining or replacement and found that 71.43% had not visited dentist sincewearing their dentures.
