Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Chaoprayayomraj Hospital

Abstract

Objective: To study the patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss in Chaoprayayomraj Hospital including age, gender, associated symptoms, initial hearing level, prognostic factors and improvement after treatment

Materials and methods: Retrospective descriptive study was done in patients who had sudden sensorineural hearing loss at outpatient department of Otolaryngology, Chaoprayayomraj Hospital during January 2008 to March 2015.

Results: Of the 273 patients, 39.93% were male and 60.07% were female, the mean of age was 50.05 years. The hearing loss occurred in one ear 77.29%. There were 40.66% of the patients who had tinnitus and 6.59% had vertigo. From the audiogram before treatment, 16.48% of the patients had mild hearing loss, 32.97% had moderate hearing loss, 19.78% had severe hearing loss and 30.77% had profound hearing loss. There were 58.61% of the patients who had hearing recovery. Comparison between patients who improved and those who did not, revealed significant difference with regards to age.

Conclusions: The steroid treatment in sudden sensorineural hearing loss improved hearing level 58.61% and the factor that determined prognosis was age.
