Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the results of distal ureteric stones treated with ureteroscopy (URS) compared with extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL).
Methods: 100 patients who diagnosed with distal ureteric stones treated by a single urologist at Banpong Hospital since January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015 were analysed by data analysis with statistical evaluation in each group. Comparative analysis by collective data descriptive of all patients treated with URS and ESWL were analysed by computing Chi-Square test.
Result: The stone-free for URS and ESWL were 86.96% and 68.52%, respectively (p=0.732). The re-treatment for URS and ESWL were 13.04 % and 31.48%, respectively (p=0.022). In URS group, stone-free for BMI < 25 and BMI ≥25 were 84.00% and 90.48%, respectively (p=0.752). In addition, stone-free for stones, sizes ≤ 1 cm and >1 cm were 91.67% and 81.82%, respectively (p=0.773). In ESWL group, stone-free for BMI < 25 and BMI ≥25 were 75.76% and 57.14%, respectively (p=0.023). Furthermore, stone-free for stone, sizes ≤ 1 cm and > 1 cm were 85.71% and 62.50%, respectively (p=0.033).
Conclusion: URS was the preferred treatment for patients with all sizes of stones regardless of BMI. ESWL should be reserved for patients with stones ≤ 1 cm. and BMI < 25.
