Abstract

Objective : To study outcome of treatment and in-hospital mortality of cardiogenic shock patients who underwent intra-aortic balloon pump therapy at Hua Hin Hospital.

Method: This is retrospective descriptive study. From July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2013, a total of medical record of 57 cardiogenic shock patients who underwent IABP therapy at Hua Hin Hospital were reviewed.  haracteristics and outcomes of those patients were investigated.

Result : The mean age of the study population was 64.6 years, 57.9% were male. Of the patients, chest discomfort was the most common presentation (66.7%), 77.2% of patients had hypertension and dyslipidemia, 36.8% had diabetes. About 43.8%, 50.9% and 5.3% of patients were diagnosed STEMI, Non STEMI and sudden cardiac arrest, respectively. The average of left ventricular ejection fraction was 36.5%. Patients with cardiogenic shock who got IABP therapy†had in-hospital mortality rate of 22.8%. The patients were referred for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of 88.6 % and coronary bypass graft surgery (CABG) of 9.1%.

Conclusion : IABP therapy with further coronary revascularization may help improved mortality in cardiogenic shock patients.
