Factors Affecting Mental Health of the Professional Nurses in Nakhonpathom Hospital

Abstract

This survey research aimed to study mental heath and the influencing factors of professional nurses in Nakhonpathom Hospital. 233 nurses were enrolled and studied from April to June 2014. The research tools were; questionnaire of general data, Thai General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) and Thai Mental Health Department’s stress assessment questionnaire. Descriptive statistics; means, S.D., percent, prevalence rate and prevalence rate ratio (PRR) was used, and also chi-square and logistic regression were applied for univariable and multivariable correlation analysis.

Results revealed that almost the samples were female (99.14%) and mean age was 37.5 (S.D. 7.7). Most of the samples were single (54.51%) and educated in bachelor degree (82.83%). 73.39% of the samples admitted sufficient income and 42.06% had monthly income of 20,001-30,000 baht. More of the samples (83.26 %) had not any chronic underlying disease, Prevalence of abnormal stress and mental health were 11. 5 and 6.5 % respectively. Mental health disorders were classified as items of physical, anxiety, social and severe depression in 4.29, 3.86, 3.86 and 0% respectively. factors which correlated to stress of nurses at Nakhonpathom Hospital were: age of 31-40 and separation of marital status and factors influenced mental health were: age of 41-50, chronic underlying diseases and abnormal anxiety.
