Factors Influencing Burnout Among Physician in Nakhonpathom Hospital

Abstract

Objective:  To study the prevalence of burnout subscales and to carry out factors influencing burnout among physicians in Nakhonpathom Hospital

Method:  This is cross - sectional descriptive study. A questionnaire was distributed to all Nakhonpathom Hospital’s physicians in 2013, who work in the hospital more than one year. The self reporting instruments were general demographic survey questionnaires, Maslach burnout inventory and Thai General Heath Questionnaire -30 (Thai GHQ-30). The Data were analyzed by statistical package program to study the prevalence of burnout subscales and to carry out factors influencing burnout among physicians in Nakhonpathom Hospital.

Result: The response rate was 77.6% (73 of 94 physicians). There were 19.2% of Nakhonpathom Hospital’s physicians experienced high emotional exhaustion, 5.5% of the physicians experienced high depersonalization and 97.3% of the physicians experienced high personal accomplishment. Job satisfaction, relationship with nurses, environmental satisfaction and scores of Thai GHQ-30 associated with the difference of high emotional exhaustion and medium to low emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, environmental satisfaction and score of Thai GHQ-30 associated with the difference of high depersonalization and medium to low depersonalization. All those factors were statistical significant at p < 0.05

Conclusion:  Nakhonpathom Hospital’s physicians effected burnout subscale including low emotional exhaustion and low depersonalization. The factors which associated with high emotional exhaustion were job satisfaction, relationship with nurses, environmental satisfaction and scores of Thai GHQ-30. However, the factor which associated with high depersonalization was environmental satisfaction and scores of Thai GHQ-30.
