Results of Asthma Treatment in Adult Asthma Clinic at Phrachomklao Hospital, Phetchaburi

Abstract

Introduction: Asthma is common disease that affects the quality of patients. The number visits to the emergency room and admission rate increase each year.

Objectives: To study asthma severity and the result of treatment after the establishment of adult asthma clinic

Materials and methods: It is a descriptive study collecting data from the records of asthma patients attaining adult asthma clinic at Phrachomklao Hospital. The data included severity, medications and visits to the emergency room and admission to the wards.

Results: During April 2011 and March 2012, there were 82 patients, 63 of which were male, aged 40-49 years. The asthma severity categories were: severe persistent 24.4 and 1.2 moderate persistent 62.2 and 9.8 mild persistent 13.4 and 37.8 and intermittent 0.0 and 51.2 (p = 0.017), while visit to the emergency room was 45.1 and 20.7 (p = 0.002) and admission rate was 19.5 and 6.1 (p = 0.000), before and after caring at the adult asthma clinic respectively. Those who came for treatment on a regular appointment had good clinical control.

Conclusion: Quality of life improved as a benefit from caring at the adult asthma clinic
