Abstract

Introduction: Rabies is a fatal infectious disease that transmitted from infected mammal. World Health Organization (WHO) has shown that Thailand is one of countries of greatest risk for rabies and offer pre-exposure vaccination to travellers who travel to endemic area. In Phrachomklao Hospital costs of post-exposure vaccination and immunoglobulin are increasing. Pre-exposure vaccination can reduce costs of post-exposure treatment.

Method: This study estimated population in Amphur Muang, Phetchaburi Province. Collect data of population and number of rabies exposure, costs of vaccine and immunoglobulin between 2008-2010. Data analysis was done by using interval estimate, epi info with critical value of 0.05.

Result: Cost of pre-exposure vaccination via intramuscular route was 104,279,360 ± 1,087,627 Bath, via intradermal route 20,855,872 ± 217,525.4 Bath while post-exposure vaccination and immunoglobulin via intramuscular route was 8,171,200 Bath per years, via intradermal route is 7,656,960 Bath per year

Conclusion: Cost of pre-exposure vaccination and post-exposure treatment without pre-exposure vaccination will equal within 2.5 - 14.46 year, it’s up to route of vaccination.
