Abstract

Objective : To know the incidence of diabetic retinopathy and associated risk factors in diabetic patients eye screening in Chaophrayayomraj hospital.

Design : Case control study

Methods : By reviewing medical records of diabetic patients who underwent screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) from 1st October 2008 - 30th September 2009 in term of age, sex, fasting plasma glucose, HbA1C, duration of illness and other diseases.

Results : Two-thousand five hundred eighty eight medical records were reviewed. The incidence Of DR was 19.1%. Age ≥ 35 years, HbA1C Level ≥ 6.5%, FPG ≥ 126 mg/dl and duration of illness ≥ 15 years were significant risks whereas sex and co-morbidities ; hypertension (HT), dyslipidemia (DLP) were not relating factors in diabetic patients who had retinopathy.

Conclusion : Eye screening examination should be included in all diabetic patients who have risks for DR for prevention of visual loss.
