Associated Factors of Exclusive Breast Feeding 6 Months in Nakhonpathom Hospital

Abstract

Objectives : To determine associated factors of exclusive breastfeeding 6 months

Methods : Mother with child age > 6 months at well baby clinic in Nakhonpathom Hospital during August 2008 to October 2008 were included. The interviews consisted of age, education, occupation, income, ANC (ANC book), birth route, knowledge of breastfeeding, antenatal intention of breastfeeding, postnatal intention of breastfeeding, husband and family support, breastfeeding problem

Results : 257 mothers by interviewed had 94 exclusive breastfeeding 6 months (36.6%). Significant associated factors of exclusive breastfeeding 6 months were age (P < 0.05), housewife mother (P < 0.05), income (P < 0.05), parity (P < 0.05), quality of ANC (P < 0.05) , knowledge of breastfeeding (P < 0.05), antenatal intention of breastfeeding (P < 0.05), postnatal intention of breastfeeding (P < 0.05), husband and family support  (P < 0.05), and breastfeeding problem (P < 0.05)

Conclusion : Associated factors of exclusive breastfeeding 6 months were age, occupation, income, parity, quality of ANC, knowledge of breastfeeding, antenatal intention of breastfeeding, postnatal intention of breastfeeding, husband and family support, and breastfeeding problem. Therefore, strategies to encourage the longer duration of exclusive breastfeeding regarding the knowledge for mother husband and family, intention of mother husband and family, and breastfeeding problem
