The Application of Inner Rubber Motorcycle Wheel as Tourniquet in Orthopaedic Surgery

Abstract

Objective : To present the application of inner rubber motorcycle wheel as tourniquet in orthopaedic surgery.

Material and Methods : Prospective descriptive study of orthopaedic patients, whom were used the inner rubber motorcycle wheel as tourniquet in operation of upper and lower extremities with local anesthesia during 1 Jan, 1997 until 31 Dec, 2007.

Results : Patient 2,150 cases [Total operation 2,864 times] 1,028 were male and the other 1,122 cases were female. Age between 11-86 years old [mean 49.2 years old]. Follow up time during 2-16 weeks [mean 5.2 weeks]. The operating time was 2-16 minutes. [mean 7.5 minutes]. Of all patients. The outcome were good without serious complication.

Conclusion : The application of inner rubber motorcycle wheel as tourniquet in onhopaedic surgew is an easy technique, also safe and inexpensive.
