Clinical Significance of Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance from Cervical Pap Smear in Samutsakorn Hospital

Abstract

Cervical cancer is the most common cancer among Thai women. Papanicolaou (Pap) smear is the best method to detect early cervical cancer. ln Samutsakom Hospital, cytologic report from June 1, 2007 to August 31, 2008 were reviewed in 8,174 persons. Abnormal cervical cytologies were 172 persons (2.1%). Sixty six patients were classified into ASCUS report, which loss follow-up 21 patients (31.8%). The 45 patients who come to receive treatment, 18 patients had cytologic follow-up, 26 patients underwent colpo-scopic examination and 24 patients undenwent histologic examination. The study showed that ASCUS Pap smear finally had 36 normal (80%), 7 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (15.6%) and 2 invasive cervical cancer (4.4%). The ASCUS cytologic report in Samutsakorn hospital correlated with women at higher risk of cervical cancer. Other diagnostic procedures eg. Colposcope, HPV DNA test should be considered than only cytologic follow-up.
