Retrospective Study of Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Kratumbaen Hospital

Abstract

Background : Upper gastrointestinal bleeding was common in general practice and incidence increased due to increasing old age population.

Objective : Primary objective was to identify causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding and secondary objective was to identify risk factors.

Materials and Methods : Retrospective study in patients who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy in Kratumbaen hospital during July 2009 to June 2010

Results : Patient 115 cases were enrolled in study. Most common causes were gastritis, duodenal ulcer, esophageal varices and gastric ulcer in 33%, 24.3% and 23.5% respectively. And most common risk factors were alcohol and NSAID in 23.5% and 12.2% respectively.

Conclusion : Most common causes of UGIB in Kratumbaen hospital were gastritis, duodenal ulcer and esophageal varices. And common risk factors were alcohol and NSAID.
