Abstract

     Upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding (UGIB) is a common health problem. A descriptive retrospective study of UGIB was conducted in Paholpolpayuhasaena Hospital from October 2005 to September 2006, to deternime and compare clinical datas between the patients with cirrhosis and noncirrhosis. There were  464 patients with male to female ratio of 2.1 :1, mean age 57.7 ± 15.3 years, cirrhosis 28.4% and mortality  rate 10.6%. The clinical datas in the patients with circhosis and non-cirrhosis were lower blood pressure, greater coagulopathy, greater blood transfusion, higher mortality and older age, greater NSAIDs intake respectively.

     Upper GI study and gastroscopy were performed 35.3% and 8.6% respectively and found esophageal varice 38.1%, gastritis 31.0% in the patients with circhosis and found gastric ulcer 36.7%, gastritis 21.1%, duodenal ulcer 20.0% in the patients with non-cirrhosis.

     Truncal vagotomy and gastrectomy were done in 2 patients. Other treatments were esophageal varice ligation 1.1%, proton pump inhibitor 94.2%, triple therapy 2.2%, beta-blocker 9.7% and sandostatin 5.6% respectively.
