Comparison of Herniorrhaphy Under Local Anesthesia Versus General Anesthesia and Spinal Block in Paholpolpayuhasena Hospital

Abstract

     Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine cost effectiveness and safety of the methods of anesthesia for hernia operation.

     Material and methods: This retrospective study consist of 100 patients with hernia who required groin herniorrhaphy at Paholpolphayuhasena Hospital from Nov 1, 1999 to Oct 31, 2004. The patients were divided into three groups according to the method of anesthesia. Group I consisted of 30 patients treated with local anesthesia, group II consist of 36 patients treated with general anesthesia and group III 34 patients treated with spinal block. The results were evaluated in total cost, complication of surgery, duration of hospitalization, post-operative pain and patients’ satisfaction.

     Result: There were difference in total cost per case, consist of operation cost and anesthesia cost, among 3 groups. The total cost was 5,100 baht, 7,330 baht and 6,140 baht in group I, II, III, respectively. The numbers of day spent in hospital in group I was the lowest. Group I had also lower complications and lower post-operative pain when compare to other groups. ·

     Conclusion: The local anesthesia is a safe and cost effective method for patients who have undergone groin herniorrhaphy.
