Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) of Thyroid Nodule in Ratchaburi Hospital

Abstract

          A retrospective study was performed on 101 patients with thyroid nodules who had preoperative FNAC evaluation and post operative pathological results in Division of Ear Nose and Throat, Ratchaburi Hospital during January 2001 to December 2005. There were 83 females and 18 males. The most common age group was 25 to 54 years. The preoperative result of FNAC found malignancy 6 patients, suspicious of malignancy 7 patients and negative for malignancy 88 patients. Postoperative pathological result found malignancy 21 patients and benign nodule B0 patients. For evaluation of diagnostic value of thyroid FNAC the sensitivity of thyroid FNAC was 52.38%, specificity 97.50% and the diagnostic accuracy 87.13 %. FNAC is safe, easy, cost-eltective and accurate for diagnosis of thyroid nodule and screening patient for surgery.
