Combined NVP and AZT to Prevent Mother - Child HIV Transmission

Abstract

          Objective : To evaluate the result of using combined NVP and AZT during labor and postpartum to prevent mother - to · child transmission of HIV

          Design : A retrospective descriptive study

          Material and Method : 28 cases of mothers with positive HIV antibody test having their babies born at Samutsakorn Hospital from May 2003 to June 2004 were studied. NVP and AZT were given to all of them during labor and to their babies within 72 hours after birth .

          Result : There were 36 per cent of cases coming to follow up clinic until getting the final results. 3 among 28 babies were found to be infected from mother -to- child transmission

          Conclusion : lntrapartum and postpartum combined NVP and AZT might have some role in prevention of mother - to - child HIV transmission. Nevertheless, obstetric complications occurring during labor and delivery might make prevention unsuccessful. Parents should be notified clearly the benefit of having their children properly followed up.
