Efficacy of Antiretroviral Drugs in Treatment of Naive HIV Infected Patients at Prachomklao Hospital

Abstract

          During this decade, declining morbidity and mortality of HIV-infected patients were demonstrated after initiation of combined antiretroviral drug treatment. lt improved the survival of the patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and side effects of antiretroviral drugs in Access to Care Project. A prospective study was conducted in 31 HIV-infected patients whose CD₄ counts were less than 250 mm³ and naive to antiretroviral drug. All of the patients were given antiretroviral drugs then clinical parameters and CD₄ counts were followed. The result showed that clinical improvement and CD₄ count increased in all patients. The mean increment was 140 cell/mm³/year. The study showed that antiretroviral drugs had significantly improved clinical and immunologic response in HIV-infected patients.
