Abstract

A retrospective descriptive study was undertaken to determine the incidence of complications and risk factors during spinal anesthesia at Banpong Hospital. There are 334 patients who under went surgical procedures under spinal anesthesia during January 2007 to May 2007. Demographic data, anesthetic records related to complications of spinal anesthesia were collected. Percentage of complications and risk factors associated with complications were calculated. Association between complications and studied factors were determined using Pearson Chi-square test. The most complication was hypotension 103 patients (30.8%) and another were shivering 37 patients (1 1.1%), backache 29 patients (8.7%), nausea vomiting 21 patients (6.3%), high block 3 patients (0.9%), postdural puncture headache (PDPH) 2 patients, urinary retention 2 patients (0.6%) and other complication 5 patients (1.5%), bradycardia 4 patients (1.2%) and numbness of legs 1 patient (0.3%). Hypotension was significantly associated with sitting position during spinal anesthesia. Complications were associated with different risk factors. Type of local anesthetic agent and technique of spinal anesthesia were not associated with complications.

The complications of spinal anesthesia were common vary from mild to severe. There are no severe complications in this study.
