Outcome of Preterm Labour in Nakhonpathom Hospital

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate cause of preterm labour. To compare neonatal complication, NICU admission, Perinatal & Neonatal death and hospital cost between preterm birth at GA < 28 weeks and preterm birth at GA > 28 weeks.

Material and Method : The retrospective analysis include data on the preterm labour at Nakhonpathom Hospital between January 2007 and October 2007. The data retrieved from the medical record included baseline data, complication of pregnancy, neonatal outcomes and hospital cost of preterm birth

Results : A total of 4,558 women delivery, 354 cases had preterm labour (20 cases had twin pregnancies), a total preterm infants were 374 cases. Incidence preterm labour was 7.77%. Most common route of delivery was vaginal delivery (62%). Most common cause of preterm labour was idiopathic preterm labour (56.50%), other cause were preterm premature rupture of membrane (24.57%), maternal complication (18.93%). RDS, NEC, Sepsis, Admit NICU, Perinatal & Neonatal death in preterm infants at GA < 28 weeks higher than preterm infants at GA ≥ 28 weeks significantly.

Conclusion : Preterm birth at GA < 28 weeks had higher neonatal complication and hospital cost than preterm birth at GA > 28 weeks significantly, especially preterm birth that increases risk of significant perinatal & neonatal death.
