Abstract

Retrospective study on incidence and progression of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) was performed in Nakhonpathom Hospital during 1st  October 2005 to 30th  June 2007. These were 195 preterm newborns.

They developed ROP 55 cases (25.20%) 27 cases were male and 28 cases were female. Average gestation age was 30.50 weeks and average birth weight was 1,610 grams.

The majority of ROP in these patients were stage I 50 cases (90.90%) stage III 3 cases (5.45%) and stage II 2 cases (3.63%).

When we classified by weight, we found that the patients under 1,000 grams 11 cases developed ROP 6 cases (54.55%) (stage I 27.27% stage III 18.18% stage II 9.09%).

The patients weight 1,001-1,500 grams 66 cases developed ROP 21 cases (31.81%) (Stage I 28.78% stage II and stage III 1.51%).

The patients weighed more than 1,500 grams, 118 cases developed ROP 28 cases (23.72%) all were stage I. We also found that 7 cases of ROP (12.72%) patient had never received oxygen therapy. Most of ROP cases were improved (70.91%).

This study showed that ROP still be the problems of premature babies, that we must watched for all Cases of prematurity that receiving oxygen therapy or not.
