Abstract

Case-control study of pregnant woman who developed severe preeclampsia during October 1, 1998 and September 30, 2003 and control with normal pregnant woman in the same period. Using study case : control = 1 : 2, we obtained 63 study cases and control with 126 cases.

Fourteen risk factors were analysed by univariate and multivariate analysis. The results revealed that risk factors associated with severe preeclampsia were body mass index (30 kg/m2 (OR = 20.05, 4.348-92.494), preeclampsia in previous pregnancy (OR :12.72, 1.351-119.918) and family history of hypertension (OR = 10.75, 1.148-100.733). These risk factors were simple to identify, could be observed early in pregnancy. Appropiate care should decrease severity and morbidity of mother and fetus.
