Abstract

During January 1998 - December 2001, a total of 28 postpartum women were diagnosed with delayed postpartum hemorrhage and admitted at Nakhonpathom Hospital. This corresponds to the incidence of 1.3 : 1000 deliveries. Among these cases, 3 had retained placental tissue in the uterine cavity (10.7%).

The retained placental tissue were successfully removed under ultrasound guidance without complications. Those without retained placental tissue received medical treatment including intravenous fluid, oxytocic drugs and antibiotics. This management guideline has shown to be safe and useful and could be applied for other settings.
