Abstract

During Jan 1997-Dec 2000, 297 children of Pediatric AIDS Clinic of Prachomklao hospital were studied. Seventy-two were children of mothers enrolled the "AZT in maternal HIV positive" program. Pregnant women received AZT 500 mg/day during pregnancy 14-34 weeks until delivery, and continue AZT in infant for 6 weeks. We found two infants infected with maternal HIV in study group (rate 2.78%), while infection rate in the group not received AZT was 42.33%. Risk factors of vertical HIV transmission were not significant different in sex, birth weight, route of delivery, bottle feeding or combined feeding ; but significantly different in AZT for prevention of vertical HIV transmission and non AZT for prevention.
