Postpartum Hemorrhage in Ratchaburi Maternal and Child Hospital

Abstract

A retrospective study was performed on 88 patients with postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in Ratchaburi Maternal and Child Hospital during October 1, 1998 to September 30, 2000.

The overall incidence was. 1.34% (immediate PPH 1.31%, late PPH 0.03%)

The most common cause of immediate PPH was uterine atony (65 cases). The placenta-associated causes were found in 18 cases. There was 1 case with tear of cervix and 2 cases with combined causes (uterine atony and tear of cervix).

Blood transfusion was given in 15 cases and hysterectomy was done in 6 cases. No patient died in this study.

Management of PPH consists of early diagnosis, prompt treatment, availability of oxytocic drugs, pros- Taglandin injection, colloidal intravenous fluid, blood and effective teamwork.
