Abstract

From January 1994·December 1997 revealed 37 cases of neural tube defects (anencephaly 33, spina bifida 3, cephalocele 1). During that period of time, there were 24,983 total births. Prevalence of neural tube defects were 1.5/1,000 total births. Because of the sensitivity of ultrasound to identify anencephaly and spina bifida exceeds 99%. There would have no need for a program of alphafetoprotein screening for neural tube defects.
