Shigellosis in Children, Nakhonpathom Hospital in 1993-1997

Abstract

          From January 1993 to December 1997, there were 80 cases of Shigellosis admitted to Nakhonpathom Hospital. 47 cases were boys and 33 cases were girls. Most of the cases were below 5 years of age. The disease occured year round with the peak in summer to the beginning of rainy season.

          The most common presentation included high fever, diarrhea, most frequently with mucous and bloody stool, there was no mortality. The two species found almost equally were Shiglla flexneri and Shigella sonnei which showed increasing resistance to Co-trimoxazole but increasing susceptibility to Ampicillin. Susceptibility to Co-Trimoxazole and Ampicillin were 9% and 57.5% respectively.
