Traffic Accident Injury Assessment in Kanchanaburi Province

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to assess the present situation of traffic accident . injury in Kanchanaburi Province regarding the three epidemiological aspects : - preson, time, and place. Data were collected from traffic accident patients who were admitted in 13 hospitals during December 15, 1995 to March 15, 1996. The patients were interviewed according to information needed through structured record form which was developed by the investigator.

Results of the study showed that the ratio of male and female traffic accident patients was 2.8 : 1 Majority (31%)of the patients were 20-29 years of age. Fortysix percent of the patients were unskilled or semiskilled employment. Most of the traffic accidents was motorcycle accident (76.8%). About 18 percent of the accidents occurred on Monday during 18.00-24.00 pm. (43.1%). It was also found that, among these patients, the proportion of male who drank alcohol before the accident occurred was significantly higher than of the female 7.2 times (P - value < 0.001). The male also had a higher risk of having severe accident than the female.
