Effect of Intracervical Prostaglandin E2 for Cervical Ripening and Induction of labour

Abstract

This randomised prospective study was done during 1 October 1993 to 30 September 1995. The high risk pregnancy 30 cases with unfavourable cervix and no uterine contraction were studied. Prostaglandin E2 was administed intracervical for induction of labour. The success rate and failure rate were 97% and 3% respectively. Membrane was ruptured in all cases after they were in labour. The patients required augmentation of labour with intravenous oxytocin only 14%. Types of labour were spontenous vaginal delivery (86%), vacuum extraction (7%) and caesarean section (7%). Ninety-two percents of spontenous vaginal delivery group delivered in 24 hours after administration of prostaglandin E2. No complication was found in patients during labour and postpartum period.
