The causes of respiratory failure were birth asphyxia (22 cases), hyaline membrane disease (18 cases), apnea (9 cases), pneumonia (3 cases), sepsis (2 cases) and other (1 case). The mortality in the infants required mechanical ventilation was 49% compared to the total mortality of 25% in this low birth weight group.
