Childhood Scurvy

Abstract

          A case of 2 11/12 year old boy with scurvy is reported. He had been fed soy been milk without vegetables, fruits or vitamin supplementation since one year of age. Seven months ago, he was unable to walk after falling from motorcycle. After he had been treated with cloxacillin syrup and MTV syrup, he walked normally. Five months before admission, he fell agian and could not walk since then. He was treated in a private clinic for several times but his clinical symptom was not improved. Physical examination revealed tenderness of both lower extremities, pseudoparalysis, frog position and muscle wasting without skin or mucous membrane bleeding. The x-ray finding was compatible with scurvy. Oral vitamin C 300 mg./day, was given with muscle exercise training program. He could extend both lower extremities on the third day of treatment, walked with support alter 1 month and walked normally within 2 months. The follow up film after 3 months showed much improvement.
