Pleural Tapping in Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever with Respiratory Distress

Abstract

A 4 year old boy, weight 15 kgs. had a history of fever, nausea and drowsiness. On the  forth day of the disease, he developed hemoconcentration, thrombocytopenia and hypovolemic  shock, the patient was treated with 5% glucose in Ringer's lactate, plasma expander, plasma and  platelet concentrate. Due to excessive administration of parenteral fluid, he developed massive  pleural effusion, ascites and severe respiratory distress. Pleural tapping was done, combined with intravenous diuretic therapy. The patient recovered fully.
