Abstract

Fifty three infants, bone to syphilitic mothers were studied in the Region 7 Health Promotion Center between January 1990 – December 1991. Thirty three mothers were treated with 2.4 million units of benzathine penicillin G intramuscularly weekly for three successive  weeks. Five mothers  were partially treated, fourteen mothers were not treated and their Infants were treated as congenital syphilis.

At birth, such physical slgns as skin rash and Hepato-spenomegaly were rare even in cases with abnormal bone X-ray suggestive of congenital syphilis. Only one infant had cord blood VDRL titer higher than her mother. About 28.57% of infants, whose mothers were not treated were low birthweight. After one year, thirty eight infants that were followed showed no symptom of congenital syphilis and had normal development. All of them except one Infant had no reactive VDRL. Of the infants, whose mother were partially or were not treated, 40% had first degree malnutrition.
