Abstract

Pulmonary nocardiosis is a rare pulmonary complication in HIV infected patients. The incidence reported in literature is about 0.3 %. The first case of pulmonary nocardiosis in HIV infected patient in Thailand is reported here. The patient, a 32-year-old farmer, was admitted because of fever, chest pain and shortness of breath for one month. During admission, chest radiography and ultrasonography revealed Ioculated pleural effusion. Pleural tapping yielded frank pus which grew Nocardia asteroides. The patient expired on the twelfth day of admission. Multiple organisms were identified in post-mortem examination, including Pneumocystis carinii.
