Incidence of Multidrug - resistant Tuberculosis Patients in Tha Muang District, Kanchana Buri

Abstract

          Objective: To study incidence of Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis patients in Tha Muang District, then the awareness of prevention of Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis has been achieved.

          Method: All cases of pulmonary MDR-TB patients at Tha Muang hospital between January 2010 and December 2011 were reviewed retrospectively. Our evaluation included data on comorbidity, sex characteristic, Age, susceptibility test result and the outcome of treatment.

          Results: In 2010, there were 80 patients with culture-proven MDR-TB. There was male 63.75%, female 36.25%. The MDR-TB incidence was 1.25%. The most common co-morbidity was diabetes mellitus (8.75%) and HIV infection (8.75%),

          In 2011, there were 59 patients with culture-proven MDR-TB. There was male 57.63%, female 42.37%. The MDR-TB incidence was 18.64%. The most common co-morbidity was diabetes mellitus (25.42%). Diabetes mellitus [Odd ratio (OR) 0.19; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.0479 to 0.7726] and HIV infection (OR 0.43; 95% CI 0.0358 to 5.2759) were the statistical significant risk factors (p < 0.05).

          Conclusions: MDR-TB is treatable, but requires much effort from both patients and health care providers. The implementation of MDR-TB control strategies are needed to cure the patients and to prevent the spread of disease.
